STUDENT INTERVENTIONS IN READING, WRITTEN LANGUAGE, MATH AND STUDY SKILLS

READING AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION

The Center offers high quality, remedial academic instruction for children with learning disabilities in reading and writing after school and through the summer. The instruction is provided in small groups using a curriculum entitled LANGUAGE!.  This curriculum is an intervention curriculum for students who have been unsuccessful in the regular classroom  It provides direct, multi-sensory  instruction in reading, writing and spelling.  The groups typically meet on Monday through Thursday for one hour, twice a week  after school. The summer session groups meet for an hour and a half twice a week. The year is divided up into 3 10-week sessions during the school year and one nine week session over the summer.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

The instruction offered is primarily for the student with a learning disability in reading and/or written language. In order for the Center to ensure that the student is receiving instruction that is tailored for him/her the Center administers a reading-screening test to each student. If the screening results indicate that the student would benefit from the Center's classes, the student is placed in a group that is matched to his/her age and ability. Families only need to call to schedule a screening time. The price of the screening is $25.

Watch our Schedule of Classes page for dates and times of the Remedial Academic Instruction sessions.

The course is offered twice a year - once in the fall and once in the winter.

MATH

Math instruction targets children ages 7-18 who are struggling in mathematics and algebra during the summer.  During the school year the instruction targets 10-18 year olds.  During the summer five remedial math classes are available.  Screening determines the best class for the child.

Grades 2-3: The  focus is on basic math skills.  Students learn basic mathematical facts, place value and problem solving techniques along with concepts of time and money, mixed with a variety of fun yet challenging games.

Grades 4-5: Again, the focus is on basic math skills, which, at this level includes:

  • Basic and advanced addition

  • Basic and advanced subtraction

  • Basic and advanced multiplication

  • Basic and advanced division

  • Place value

  • Rounding

  • Problem Solving Techniques

  • Fractions and decimals

Grades 6-9:  The focus in this class is ensuring that the underlying math concepts are in place to begin algebra.  The program uses the curriculum "Transitional math" as a foundation and "Hands-on Equations" to teach beginning algebra.

Grades 10-12:  The focus in this class is on remedial algebra.  It is for those students who are in algebra and are struggling to pass.  The "Algebra Ready" curriculum is used in conjunction with other materials to teach these concepts.

APPLICATION PROCESS:  A screening is required for initial acceptance into all math classes to determine placement and whether the student is appropriate for the Center's program.  Parents need only call 734-3914 to schedule the screening.  Please see the Schedule of classes for dates and times.
